Tessie Hutchinson is the one who gets sacrificed. The name “Hutchinson has a historical background, it was a name of one of the Christian leaders in the United States; Anne Hutchinson. In 1636 Anne Hutchinson was banished from the Massachusetts Colony accused of heresy. Years later, she moved to New York where Indians massacred her. In my opinion, by borrowing Anne’s surname, Shirley Jackson, compares her character's fate with the fate of the historical Anne Hutchinson.
In addition, Tessie Hutchinson apparently seemed not to take the ritual too seriously. Tessie arrived late for the lottery and tried to make a joke out of it. When Tessie was chosen she tried to point out the unfairness of the lottery. She is actually speaking out what the others have not dared to, just like Anne when she rejected the ideas of the church and the community, and preached her own beliefs. They both fought religious rules with little hope that someone would speak in their defense. In stead they were both "tried," and ended up being slaughtered.
The tradition of the lottery appears so natural, so inevitable, to its participants that they cannot imagine protesting against it. It seems like a sin against the institution of the lottery rather than the understandable pleas of a woman who doesn't want to die. After Tessie many others died, but this story make us analyze, and think about what our reaction would be in this situation. Would we speak out for ourselves, or just understand that that’s the way it is?

Miracle League
"If I were to tell you about an
organized youth basebal
l league,
You might call it ordinary.
If I were to tell you the
athletes are
physically and mentally challenged
You might call it touching.
If you were to see them play you
would call it a Miracle."

Mother Teresa and her International Influence
She is not Brittany Spears or Madonna. Probably never entered a boutique, but she is one of the women that mark the path for humanity. It is very possible that her concern for her look was not more than water and soap, but her eyes radiate a special strength. Yes, it is Mother Teresa of Calcutta, the nun with “a heart of iron and silk."
Pope John Paul II receives Mother Teresa in a private audience and he that without ever having studied diplomacy she was the best "ambassador" of the Pope in every nation, forums and meetings of the universe. Indira Gandhi once admitted to the Assembly of the UN: "In the presence of Mother Teresa, all rightly feel a little humiliated and ashamed of ourselves."
She is known as ton of the most powerful woman from the last century. She could deal with the Hindus and Muslins in a country with so many differences of ethnicity and religion . She talked to the British soldiers, prayed for peace with Irish women, and, in the cause of reconciliation, paid a call on the Reverend Ian Paisley, the controversial Protestant leader. She opened a home for Bangladesh women raped by Pakistani soldiers. Mother Teresa's most astonishing and bewildering characteristic is her lack of any sense of indignation.
In her humble way of working for the poorest of the poor, I think she never realized how much power and influence she had in the world. She was always focus in her mission: to bring love to people and make them feel that there is a place in the world for them. In my opinion, her life story and everything that she did I don’t consider her human. For me, she is a kind of creature that God sends to the earth to show us the way that we could go to solve all the problems between nations. Her simply way of talking and solving issues amazed everybody around her, and I don’t think that she realized how many people did she touch and transformed lives with her actions. Mother Teresa died in September 5th , 1997 and she was beatified by Pope John Paul II and given the title Blessed Teresa of Calcutta in October 19th, 2003.
This is just the first scratch of my research paper for my International Relation Class. December, 4th, 2011.
